SHINE Mentors

SHINE Mentoring is a volunteer-led charity providing mentoring programmes in five schools across Southwark.  The organisation was started in 2004 by a group of students at King's College London who now sit as the charity's Founding Trustees.  SHINE is a registered charity and an independent organisation.  It works with the support of the Widening Participation Team of King's College who provide us venue hire enabling training and school visits.

SHINE has been awarded the Approved Provider Standard for Mentoring and Befriending and accreditation as an organisation working safely with children from the NSPCC.

Since 2004, SHINE has provided mentor support to over 1,400 children. Mentors are all university students from King's College and therefore are excellent role models and ambassadors for continuing education. Mentors also provide friendship, help to build confidence and support the child's learning.

“I like having a SHINE Mentor because she inspires me and helps me with my work.” – Israel (Year 5)

“I enjoy having a SHINE Mentor because she supports me with my learning.” – Chiderah (Year 5)

School Nurse

Our School Nurse, Sarah Beech offers support to families and children through one to one assessments, coffee mornings and class workshops. The topics covered have been personal hygiene, healthy eating and fitness.

School Nurse

The school works closely with the local Police and we have regular visits from our local community Police Officer. He has run class workshops where the children have been able to ask him questions about his job. He has also led assemblies on various topics including, road safety, stranger danger and E safety.

We raised money for Fareshare by growing vegetables in our school garden and selling them at Borough market.

Hands on London

Hands on London organised volunteers from various companies to come in to school to run a regeneration project. They painted outside areas of the school, concreted the front of school and cleared up the garden area.
